Conditional templates

If I attempt to kiss you beyond this line of sight
or trees
or moment
know that it is without regret or pretense
or chill running down spine.

If my attempts are but empty shells
or souls
or ghosts
know that I lived through the sunrise of everyday
darkening with worlds
or spoils
or victories.

If the clouds attempt to tear themselves open for you
or sacrifice
or cry
know that it must be a reckoning
or time
or apocalypse
which is beautiful.

If the beauty is not filled with frowns
or failures
or wistfulness
know that it cannot be of the body
or ghostly
or soulful
or real
which is to say,

If I attempt to kiss you
and Scotty doesn’t beam you up
or the world doesn’t end
or zombies aren’t real
or time doesn’t stand still
know that it must be an alternate
or a universe
or an abduction
or a timeline
or simply not a kiss.
